Style Yourself E-Course by Delightfully Tacky

Hello! Long time no see, blogosphere friends. It's been a while but I'm back. I wanted to let you all know about my newest self-improvement project!

I just signed up for my first e-course, Style Yourself by Delightfully Tacky! Elizabeth is one of my favorite bloggers and I'm excited to dive in and read her tips on personal style. I think I'm the ideal candidate for this e-course because I know the basics of style but I can be pretty hit-or-miss in actually executing these "rules" successfully. I get lazy, and my desire for quick/comfortable/easy clothing options trumps everything else. But Elizabeth's philosophy is to throw out the "rule book" and do what work for YOU. It's about being creative and having fun! So hopefully I'll get a lot out of this course. I'll keep you posted!

Marc by Marc Jacobs Bombay Mevie

In a world filled with Groupon, RueLaLa, and a million other daily deal sites fighting for space in my inbox, it's hard to think back to a time before daily deals and flash sales. But it wasn't so long ago--back in 2009, that I received a very tempting email from a brand new site, Gilt.com, and pounced on my first designer handbag. It was this Marc by Marc Jacobs Bombay Mevie.

At the time, it seemed amazing to me that a fabulous handbag with a retail value of over $400 was on Gilt for just $220. Although my impulse buy represented over a month's worth of shopping budget, I was so excited to receive my new purchase.

When it arrived, I ripped open the package and marveled at the buttery softness of this handbag -- real leather! -- and its shiny gold hardware. Even the durable cloth lining impressed me. This bag features a roomy main compartment with a zipper pocket and 2 interior pockets. But the main feature is the large front flap pocket with lock detail. I use this pocket for my cell phone and lip balm.  My only complaint with the bag is that it's a bit "floppy" and tends not to hold its shape. Still, it's my first "big girl" handbag and it taught me some good lessons about shopping for designer duds online.

If this very same bag were on a flash sale site today, I probably wouldn't even give it a click. In fact, I haven't bought anything from Gilt, RueLaLa or any other flash site in at least 18 months. Am I the only one who's gotten burned out by these sites?

Nowadays, in order to catch my attention, a daily deal has to fall into one of the following categories:

  1. Under $50 - It's extremely rare that I'll spend more than $50 on a daily deal site. This includes shipping. Since most of these purchases are impulse buys, I can't justify a higher price tag.
  2. Something I've wanted for a while - Gone are the days when I would take a chance on an unfamiliar designer. I never purchase brands or products I haven't seen before.
  3. At least 60% off - Recently Refinery29.com did a daily deal for Rebecca Minkoff handbags -- an awesome brand that I definitely can't afford at full price. But at less than 50% off, the discount wasn't steep enough to get me bite. I hold out for clearance sales of 60% or more these days.
  4. Groupons/LivingSocial Deals for places where I already shop - When Gap, Old Navy, The Body Shop, or Barnes & Noble has a Groupon, I'm there. Since I shop at all these stores regularly, I'm confident I'm getting a true discount.

Nevertheless, my Marc by Marc Jacobs Bombay Mevie has served me well and definitely gotten its share of use. 3 years later I still carry it regularly, and plan on using it until it's well worn out.
